KinderWorld Group and Hwa Chong Institution of Singapore will co-host the annual 2011 Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS) for the third year in a row.

The competition will be held from April to May for exceptional sixth and seventh grade students from secondary schools in Hanoi, HCMC, Danang, Hue and Binh Duong as organizers seeks to find the top mathematical talent in Asia Pacific.

In 2009, 330 Vietnamese students took part in APMOPS and the following year that figure rose to 486 participants. Last year Vietnam excelled when two local students were ranked 11th and 12th in the region.

KinderWorld has revealed that this year’s competition has attracted 581 students nationwide, including 379 from Hanoi, 103 from HCMC and Binh Duong, with 99 from Hue and Danang.

APMOPS has two rounds and students have to do all the examinations in English. The first exam is 30 multiple choice questions to be completed within 120 minutes. The first round will take place on April 9 at the KinderWorld’s Singapore International School campuses in Hanoi, Danang and HCMC.

The highest-placed students from the first round across the Asia Pacific region will be invited by Hwa Chong Institution to join the second round held in Singapore on May 28. This time all Asia Pacific students go head to head and the second round has six mathematical problems of which the students must find all five answers within 120 minutes. The top 40 students from the second round will receive an award in a ceremony held the same day at Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore.

KinderWorld will finance return airfares between Vietnam and Singapore for the top 10 Vietnamese students who qualify for the second round. The Hwa Chong Institution will cover food and board for each student.

Last year APMOPS drew 7,728 candidates from 14 nations in Asia Pacific. For more information on APMOPS 2011, check out the website at www.apmops.kinderworld.net.
